Dr. Hufnagel was born in Okarche, OK in 1965.  His parents moved the family to North Dakota three years later, to purchase land and run a stocker cattle operation.  The family operated that ranching/farming operation for eleven years, before moving back to southeast Oklahoma.

The family continued in the Stocker Cattle business in the Red River bottom south of Hugo.  Dr. H graduated from Hugo High School in 1984.  He received a BS in Agricultural Economics in 1987, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1991, both while attending ,

Dr. Hufnagel then joined a five doctor mixed animal practice in Minot, North Dakota, working from 1991 to 2001.  While the majority of his work was with beef cattle, the patient load was very diverse—-dogs, cats, pigs, dairy, sheep/goats, zoo animals, bison, elk, ostriches, emus, etc…

He worked for Pfizer Animal Health (overlapping time at Minot Vet Clinic) from 2000 to 2004, but left that position because Pfizer wanted him to move to Pennsylvania.  He instead moved back to the OKC area and married his wife (born and raised in Okarche).  He purchased Westbrook Animal Clinic in 2007, and then merged that practice with another “solo practioner” practice.  Dr. H and his new partner (Dr. Pribil)  purchased land in Edmond and built the Pet Medical Center of Edmond, moving in for business on January 2, 2010.  That business grew and flourished, but was sold to Carevet Corporation in 2022, as a retirement exit strategy for Dr. Pribil.

Dr. H purchased a wheat field north of Crescent in March of 2023, where pens, corrals, and headquarters were established for a Stocker Cattle operation (HF Cattle Company).  This eventually grew into HF Veterinary Services & Boarding Kennel, which is fully operational as of July 2026.

Dr. Hufnagel and his wife LeAnn have four children.  Mary was born in 2005, and will be married August of 2026.  Elizabeth was born in 2007.  John was born in 2009.  Joe was born in 2011.  All of the kids are musicians, playing piano and violin.  John plays the bagpipes and Joe is a drummer in a Scottish band.  Elizabeth teaches piano, violin, and voice.  The family lives just south of Waterloo Road, in north Edmond.
